The Agenda

The Apollo Alliance

The Apollo Alliance is a coalition of business, labor, environmental, and community leaders working to catalyze a clean energy revolution in America to reduce America's dependence on foreign oil, cut the carbon emissions that are destabilizing the climate, and expand opportunities for American businesses and workers.

To do this, the Apollo Alliance is promoting a federal policy agenda — The New Apollo Program. The New Apollo Program is a comprehensive economic investment strategy to build America's 21st century clean energy economy and dramatically cut energy bills for families and businesses. It will generate and invest $500 billion over the next ten years and create more than five million high quality green-collar jobs. It will accelerate the development of the nation's vast clean energy resources and move us toward energy security, climate stability, and economic prosperity. And it will transform America into the global leader of the new green economy.

Apollo coalitions have been set up in ten states and four cities, including New York City. These coalitions have helped gain approval for: renewable energy standards in Oregon, Washington, Colorado, Hawaii, and Wisconsin; renewable fuels standards in Washington and Oregon; appliance efficiency standards in Washington, Oregon and Vermont; building retrofit programs in New York City, Los Angeles, Colorado, and Milwaukee; climate change legislation in California and Vermont; new clean energy funds and/or tax credits in Oregon, Washington, Colorado, Wisconsin and New York City; and green-collar job training programs in Oakland and Los Angeles (2005-8).

The NYC Apollo Allianceconvened by Urban Agenda, is currently spearheading a multi-stakeholder campaign to mobilize the City to prepare New Yorkers for green jobs. The Green Collar Jobs Roundtable campaign is connecting businesses, unions, community members and government agencies in a coordinated effort to close the gap between jobseekers and green jobs. The Campaign is charting a roadmap to meet the City's growing demand for a well-trained green collar workforce, and will use the roadmap in 2009 to urge Mayoral and City Council candidates to prioritize a green collar workforce development plan.
