GREEN AFFORDABLE HOUSING Green “High Performance” buildings are not a concept of the future but a growing reality of today. Many cities both in the US and around the world have adopted groundbreaking innovative design practices that enhance how we live and work. High performance buildings are also critical for a strong economy and a healthy city. Building green reduces energy costs, increases productivity, and sustains our environment while curbing negative health effects on residents. However poor neighborhoods bear the burden of air pollution due to close proximity to polluting industries, highways and substandard and outdated housing constructions. Low income neighborhoods not only face economic hardships but also poor infrastructure, unhealthy living conditions, lack of access to and use of health care services, and they are almost always excluded from innovative, healthy solutions. For affordable housing units, high performance buildings are even more significant. Many residents of affordable housing are dispossessed and poor. Better living conditions, for the already marginalized residents of affordable housing units, is not only an issue of sustainability, it is also an issue of basic human rights. Affordable housing residents also have the right to clean indoor air, energy efficient homes and most importantly to higher standards of living.
